Capify Cares is a new global initiative brought to you by our teams in the UK, US, Canada and Australia. With offices in so many places, we recognised that there are many local charities all over the world that could benefit from our help and support.
The holidays are coming up so Capify UK, which is based in Manchester, decided to get involved with Key 103’s Mission Christmas. This is a great charity which every employee feels passionately about because it’s so close to home. 1 in 3 children in Greater Manchester live in poverty, which means they are likely to wake up on Christmas morning to very little.
Mission Christmas encourages people to donate toys or money so that parents have something to give their children on the 25th December. We decided that instead of buying each other presents or doing a secret Santa in the office, we would instead go out and buy a gift for this charity. We started collecting toys in early November and by mid-December, we had 136 in our office! In total over £500 was spent by our Directors and staff which is fantastic! It’s a great feeling knowing that because of our efforts, lots of children will be able to open presents with their family and friends on Christmas day.
Mission Christmas also organises its own Christmas jumper day where people all over Manchester are encouraged to come to work wearing something festive. Everyone in the UK office took part and we each donated £1, which was used to get further toys.
Some of our employees were able to help out even more, by giving up their free time to work in the Mission Christmas HQ organising presents and speaking to the people who had applied for them. Nina, one of the leaders of Capify Cares says: “Going to the warehouse and helping out was one of the most humbling experiences of my life. I’ve seen the whole process, from buying toys to organising them and meeting the families they go to, I wish I could have devoted even more of my time to it.”
In total Mission Christmas has raised £1,844,468 of gifts to support 48,690 children. This is an increase from 2014 when £1.6m worth of gifts were bought and 37,000 local children received them. We look forward to doing it all again next year and hopefully we will help even more people!
If you haven’t yet donated anything to Mission Christmas, there is still time. You can go on their website to give online or text KEY to 70808 to send £5.
